The initial spark for this project came directly from the work of Martin Parr, specifically his iconic series The Last Resort: Photographs of New Brighton. His joyful, yet candid, embrace of middle-class people in leisure, his masterful use of saturated color, and his distinctly modern approach to documentary photography were a profound inspiration. In 2007, this series was captured in a world before the omnipresence of smartphones, social media, and the relentless pressure to curate a perfect digital life.

Dijon, France, is renowned for its rich architectural heritage that seamlessly blends medieval charm with Renaissance elegance. The city’s historic center features well-preserved timber-framed houses alongside grand stone buildings, reflecting its past as a wealthy center of the Dukes of Burgundy. Notable landmarks include the Gothic-style Dijon Cathedral and the Palais des Ducs, showcasing intricate façades and detailed masonry. Throughout the city, narrow cobblestone streets and wrought-iron balconies complement the distinctive Burgundy style, creating an inviting atmosphere that highlights Dijon’s cultural and historical significance.

In Mexico City’s San Ángel neighborhood, the Casa Estudio of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo stands as a striking example of early modernist architecture in Latin America. Through my lens, I was drawn to the bold shapes of the twin studios—geometric volumes softened by time and story. The building’s minimalist design, with its clean lines, bridges, and staircases, plays beautifully with natural light, casting ever-shifting shadows that emphasize its sculptural presence.

During my recent trip to Mexico City, I had the chance to visit the iconic Casa Luis Barragán—a place that has long been on my architectural bucket list. Wandering through its serene spaces, I was captivated by the masterful use of vibrant color, natural light, and texture that defines Barragán’s unique vision.

This is the remarkable journey I undertook with my daughter, brother, and niece, retracing the steps of my grandmother's harrowing escape in 1940 from the Nazi-occupied zone of northern France to the free zone. Over the course of 11 days, we traveled 400 miles, immersing ourselves in the landscapes and history that shaped her journey. Each mile we covered evoked reflections on resilience and courage, allowing us to honor her legacy while forging our own stories. Together, we discovered not only the physical paths she took but also the emotional connections that bind our family across generations, culminating in a journey that was as much about remembrance as it was about forging new memories together.
