White Hokkaido: A ski trip Into Japan’s Frozen North
Our first trip to Niseko, Hokkaido, was an absolute whirlwind of stunning vistas and unexpected turns. While we arrived with dreams of that legendary, waist-deep "Japow," Mother Nature had other plans for the snow consistency this time around—but honestly, it hardly mattered. The sheer scale of the resort and the sight of the majestic Mount Yotei looming over the horizon like a perfect volcanic cone made every run feel cinematic. Skiing surrounded by bamboos was the most fun experience - not doubt we are in Japan.
Between laps, we found our ultimate sanctuary: a ramen shop right on the slopes. The real magic, however, happened once we unbuckled our boots. We traded the chilly slopes for the soul-warming heat of a traditional onsen, soaking in the mineral-rich thermal waters while looking out at the volcanic peaks. Feeling the crisp winter air on our faces while our muscles finally relaxed in the steam was the perfect counterpoint to the brutal jet lag and a day on the mountain.
Even without the bottomless powder we expected, the combination of the dramatic volcanic landscape and the incredible local flavors made our first Niseko experience one for the books.
