Interdependence in East Greenland - Day 1

After an hour and a half flight from Reykjavik, Iceland, we land in Kulusuk, Greenland — on a dirt runway! That’s a first for me. We're lucky: it’s a beautiful day. And here is the view right outside the airport. We are off to a great start!

We are a group of 6 women: Bethany from Hinoki Travels, who organized the trip, Lisa her aunt, Mel from Texas, Lisa and Lisa, 2 friends from Minneapolis and me. At the airport we meet our 2 guides, John who is from Scotland and Jukku a local guide, dog sledder, hunter and fisherman. We are in Greenland for a week of hiking, camping and adventuring. We all have been dreaming and planning this trip for so many months and we all certainly can not wait!

We are walking from the airport to the lodge and it takes us about 40 min. Our luggages are being transported by quad bikes. It is a very pleasant walk at this time of day, the light is beautiful and we are all getting to know each other. We are discovering the grounds, the moss and flowers. While we are hiking, the plane that brought us here takes off and flies back to Reykjavik. The views are incredible, we see fiords, mountains, glaciers, prairies, it really is gorgeous. John says that usually there should be more icebergs in the water but at the moment there are none. Climate change he says. As we arrive at the village of Kulusuk we are greeted by dogs howling!!! it’s dinner time. What a show they put on! The dogs are all on a pretty tight leach, they can’t get to each other because apparently they would fight to death.

At the lodge we are greeted by Matt and Helen the owners of Pirhuk Greenland Mountain Guides. We all dine together at a big table yummy pasta bolognese and coconut macaroons. After diner our group go out again to walk around the village and look at the pretty views and end of day lights.

The view from my room is pretty spectacular. I watch the fog roll in, the colors change. It’s 11pm and there is still a lot of light. It’s pretty disturbing. I have a force myself to go to bed otherwise I would just watch the views all night.
