Frequently Asked Questions
-
For high-end architectural or interior photography, it is best to reach out 4 to 6 weeks in advance. This buffer allows for:
Weather Contingencies: High-end exterior shots require specific sky conditions. A 4-week lead time allows for a "weather day" if the Bay Area fog or rain doesn't cooperate.
Site Scouting: For complex builds, a pre-shoot walkthrough helps identify how the sun hits the structure at different hours, ensuring the hero shots are perfectly timed.
I am flexible with my agenda and will always postpone a shoot if the construction is not quite ready or if the weather is not cooperating.
-
A pre-shoot walkthrough is necessary, ideally 1 to 2 weeks before the shoot. This can be done in person or via a high-quality video call. The goal is to:
Identify Hero Angles: Pinpoint the specific design features that must be captured.
Track the Light: Observe how the sun moves through the space. This determines the shooting order.
Assess Styling Needs: Spot any clutter that may need to be physically covered or digitally removed later and what props or accessories I will need to bring to the shoot.

I use a Creative Fee + Licensing model, which is the industry standard for professional architectural and design photography.
1. The Creative Fee
The Creative Fee covers the production phase of the project. This is a flat rate based on the time spent on-site and the technical complexity of the shoot.
Half-Day (Up to 4 hours): Best for small interior renovations or single-room features.
Standard Day (Up to 8 hours): The most common choice for residential or commercial projects, allowing us to track the light from morning through late afternoon.
Extended Day (Up to 10-12 hours): Includes Blue Hour or twilight photography, essential for capturing exterior lighting and the interior glow of a building.
The Creative Fee includes:
Pre-shoot consultation and planning
My time shooting with my professional equipment (tilt-shift lenses, specialized lighting, and tethering).
On-site compositional styling using my kit of props and plants.
2. Retouching, Licensing & Usage
Standard License: Included for the commissioning party (e.g., the Architect). This grants non-exclusive, unlimited use for your website, social media, portfolios, and industry award submissions.
Standard retouching: vertical and perspective corrections, color calibration, and tonal balancing are included.
-
I generally style with what is available on-site, using the existing furniture and architectural elements as our foundation. To elevate the composition, I bring a curated selection of small props, accessories, and objects to add texture and interest. I also incorporate plants and flowers to bring a layer of life and organic color to the frames.
I highly recommend involving a professional interior designer or stylist if the budget allows. A dedicated designer brings a specialized eye for propping and can source larger-scale items or specific textiles that translate beautifully in a two-dimensional photograph.
-
Cost sharing is a standard industry practice that allows multiple parties—such as the architect, contractor, and interior designer—to split the expenses of a photoshoot. It is the most economical way for everyone to receive high-end imagery for their respective portfolios.
Both parties (or more) can share the Creative Fees for the photoshoot. The Creative Fees include:
Pre-Production & Planning: Time spent on site walkthroughs, light tracking, and developing a custom shot list tailored to each partner's goals.
On-Site Photography: My professional time and expertise on the day of the shoot, including the use of specialized architectural equipment (tilt-shift lenses, tethering systems, and lighting).
Art Direction & Compositional Styling: Careful editing of each frame, including furniture placement, prop styling with my curated kit, and managing the natural and supplemental light.
Then each party will be billed separately for their own Image Licensing. The image selection can be different as well as the retouching.
-
Social Medias: Images are licensed for use on your firm’s official social media channels (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.).
Awards: Your license covers the use of the images for all local, national, and international design award submissions (e.g., AIA, ASID, or regional building awards).
Print: If the award body publishes a special "Winners" issue or digital gallery, the license typically covers this editorial use, provided the photographer is credited.
Marketing: You have the right to use the images in your own printed brochures, RFP responses, and physical portfolios.
Editorial: If a publication like Dwell, Luxe, or Architectural Digest expresses interest in a feature, the magazine usually handles the "Editorial Rights" directly with the photographer. I am always happy to facilitate these conversations to help get your work published.
The licensing is always unlimited in time.
Third-Party Use: If a manufacturer (e.g., the window or flooring company used in the project) wants to repost your images on their social media, they must contact me for a separate Third-Party License.
-
My turnaround is usually a day or two unless agreed otherwise. Then I need another 7 to 10 days to finalize the files and fully retouch them.
I deliver high resolution files as well as low resolution files in .JPG.
-
To capture the true feel of a space—especially in the Bay Area where we often have bright coastal sun hitting dark interior woods or industrial concrete—I use a sophisticated blend of digital and physical lighting techniques.
My preferred light is the natural and available light - but if necessary I will use a strobe or flash.
I also often use a multi-exposure blending technique : Unlike automated HDR software—which can often make colors look muddy, unreel or glowy—I manually mask different exposures.
-
Standard Global Adjustments: Vertical & Perspective Correction, Color Calibration, Tonal Balancing
Specialized Architectural Retouching: Removal of Electrical & Safety Elements, Cables and Construction Artifacts. Surface Cleaning, Removing distracting reflections.
What is Not Included: Virtual staging, major landscaping, complex construction completion.
